Description

A single 180ml master cup in the Japanese style, thrown with a slightly flared lip that directs the tea across the palate rather than straight down the throat. It is the size that sits between a tasting cup and a mug, which makes it right for a considered second steep, a bowl of matcha or a quiet cup at a desk in the middle of the afternoon.

Three glaze styles are available, each with the depth and slight unevenness that comes from a reactive black glaze over a fired ceramic body. The wall is thick enough to hold heat but not so heavy the cup feels blunt, and the unglazed foot ring keeps it steady on a tea tray or wooden table. Linden & Oak Co. picked this piece for the way the glaze pools differently on every cup, so no two arrive identical.

Rinse with hot water before the first pour to warm the ceramic and open the aroma. Hand wash without detergent where possible, since tea drinkers often prefer the patina that builds inside a well-used cup, and dry it fully before storing. Avoid sudden temperature changes and steer clear of the dishwasher. Presented on its own or with a small tea set, it makes a thoughtful gift for a tea drinker.

A Cup For Sitting Still

180ml is not a lot of tea, and that is deliberate. It is enough for one unhurried cup, which is the whole idea behind a master cup.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a master cup?

In Japanese and Chinese tea practice it is the single larger cup the host drinks from. At 180ml it is sized for one considered cup rather than a mug of tea.

Will the glaze look exactly like the photo?

Very close, with small natural variation. Glaze pools and breaks differently on every piece, which is what gives ceramic tea ware its depth.

Is it comfortable to hold?

Yes. The body is shaped to sit in the palm with the rim clear of your fingers, so you can cradle it while the tea cools.

Can I use it for coffee?

You can. Many customers use it for espresso, cortado or a small pour over when they want something more tactile than a mug.

How do I look after it?

Hand wash in warm water without harsh detergent. Avoid sudden temperature shocks and the glaze will stay flawless.
