Description

A small glass vessel shaped to hold an avocado stone at the waterline so it can root without toothpicks, saucers or guesswork. The seed sits in the moulded upper cradle with its base just touching the water below, which is the position germination actually needs - wet at the root end, dry at the crown. Because the glass is clear, the whole process is visible from the first split in the seed coat to the first white root.

Germination usually takes between two and eight weeks depending on warmth and light. Keep the vase somewhere bright but out of direct afternoon sun, top the water up so the base of the seed stays submerged, and change it every few days to keep it clear. Once a stem appears and roots fill the bowl the seedling can be potted into soil, and the vase is ready for the next stone. It also works for spring bulbs, garlic and propagating cuttings.

Available singly or as a two-piece set, which is the more useful option since avocado stones germinate unpredictably and starting two at once roughly doubles the odds. Clear glass, hand wash in warm soapy water, and dry before reuse to stop mineral marks building on the inside. Linden & Oak Co. ships across Australia and New Zealand.

Watch The Roots Arrive

Clear glass means you see the first root break the seed instead of guessing. It is the part of growing an avocado that makes people check on it every morning.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before anything happens?

Most stones split and send a root down within two to six weeks, with the shoot following after. Keeping it somewhere warm and bright shortens that considerably.

How much of the seed sits in water?

Only the flat base. The rim holds the stone so the bottom third stays submerged and the crown stays dry, which is the split that stops it rotting.

How often do I change the water?

Top it up as it drops and change it fully once a week. Fresh water keeps the base clean, and because the glass is clear you can see when it is due.

What happens once it outgrows the vase?

Once the root fills the chamber and the shoot has a few leaves, move it into potting mix and keep the vase for the next stone. Many people run one continuously.

Why does it come as two pieces?

The two piece option lets you run a second stone at a different stage, so there is always one rooting while the other is potted on. It also makes an easy gift to split.
